The Colour of Being

The Colour of Being

By Chaya De Silva

The story

Sometimes I close my eyes just to have a moment to myself. Away from work, responsibilities and all the things still waiting to be done. That feeling is what I wanted to bring into this painting.

Her eyes are closed, her chin slightly lifted. There is something peaceful about her, even with so much colour moving across her face and body.

For me, those colours hold the different parts of who we are. The happy moments, the difficult ones, the things we show people and the feelings we keep to ourselves. They all belong.

The Colour of Being is about feeling comfortable in your own skin. You can still be changing, still figuring things out, and allow yourself to enjoy who you are today.

About the artwork

A colourful female portrait set against a clear turquoise background, The Colour of Being brings together bright pinks, warm oranges, yellows and deeper shades of purple and green.

Thick, expressive marks follow the shape of her face and shoulders, with small flower-like details appearing among the layers. I love the balance between her quiet expression and the energy of the paint.

It’s a piece for someone who feels a connection to colour and wants a little of that warmth in their home. Something to live with, look at each day, and find their own meaning in.
