Reimagining Julia: My Audible UK Collaboration for George Orwell’s 1984
In 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with Audible UK on a custom artwork inspired by Julia, one of the central characters in George Orwell’s iconic novel, 1984.
This project invited me to interpret a well-known literary character through my own visual language, transforming words, emotion and atmosphere into a piece of art.
Discovering Julia Through Art
Julia is a complex character whose individuality exists within a world of control, surveillance and restriction. When developing the artwork, I wanted to look beyond her physical appearance and explore the emotions beneath the surface.
My interpretation focused on her inner strength, independence and quiet resistance. I wanted the portrait to capture the tension between vulnerability and courage—the spirit of a woman holding on to her identity in a society that seeks to take it away.
Through expressive colour, layered textures and carefully considered details, I created a contemporary visual representation of Julia while respecting the dark and powerful atmosphere of Orwell’s story.
Translating Literature Into a Visual Experience
One of the most exciting aspects of this collaboration was translating a character from literature into a single image.
An audiobook allows listeners to imagine the story in their own way. My challenge was to create an artwork that complemented that personal experience without defining it completely. The portrait needed to suggest Julia’s character and emotional world while leaving space for the audience’s own interpretation.
My artistic practice often explores identity, femininity, resilience and the emotions we carry beneath the surface. These themes connected naturally with Julia and gave me the opportunity to bring a personal perspective to such an important literary character.
Where Storytelling and Art Meet
This collaboration with Audible UK showed how visual art can add another layer to the experience of a story. Literature, audio and painting each communicate differently, yet they can come together to create a richer emotional connection.
It was an honour to contribute my artistic interpretation to a project connected with George Orwell’s 1984. Reimagining Julia allowed me to engage with a classic work of literature in a new way while introducing my art to the world of audiobooks and spoken storytelling.
I am proud to have created a piece that celebrates Julia’s individuality and brings my own artistic touch to this unforgettable story.
